LASN MEN'S COLLEGE HONORS
UCSB's DePuy is Player of the Year
Nick DePuy, who went on a torrid scoring run after his move last year to a position up front, continued the pace in 2015, leading UC Santa Barbara to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division I men's tournament, and his efforts are rewarded with the LA Soccer News menís college player of the year award.
The junior striker from Irvine, Calif., who stands 6-foot-4, led the Gauchos to the North Division title in the Big West Conference by scoring 15 goals, eight of them game-winners, en route to NSCAA first-team All-America recognition and his second straight Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year honor.
DePuy came to UCSB as a midfielder/defender and started 18 games without scoring as a freshman, but he has tallied 23 goals in 36 games since he was moved to forward in late September 2014, and he has 25 goals (14 game-winners) and two assists in his past two seasons. The Gauchos are 16-0-4 when he scores.
Defenses quieted him the latter part of the season, holding him to just two goals in the Gauchos' final 10 games and none in their last five, but he continued to play a key role opening space for teammates.
UCSB's Tim Vom Steeg is the coach of the year, UCSB's Geoffrey Acheampong the freshman of the year, and Stanford All-American Brandon Vincent is the out-of-area player of the year.
