Long-distance shot lifts St. Mary's past Pepperdine women

Pepperdine's women dictated terms from start to finish but dropped a 1-0 decision Sunday to visiting St. Mary's, which scored a fortunate goal at the start of the second half.

Kiana Quarles took advantage of a Waves giveaway just 2:15 after the break, floating a long-distance shot that ducked into the upper-right corner. It was one of just two shots SMC (6-5-2 overall, 1-1-0 WCC) put on frame.

Julia McDonald made six saves -- the biggest a diving stop on Bri Visalli late in the first half -- to keep the Gaels in the game as Pepperdine (6-4-2, 1-1-0) built an 18-5 shot advantage.

Pepperdine, which has won just two of their last seven and three of their last nine games, plays Friday at San Francisco.
