USC FALLS ON A PK
Washington edges Trojans women, sweeps L.A. schools
Washington converted a penalty kick early in the second half Sunday and held on for a 1-0 Pacific 12 Conference victory over visiting USC.
Shannon Simon converted the spot kick in the 58th minute after Kayla Mills committed a foul in the Trojans' box, and USC (7-4-1 overall, 2-1-0 Pac-12) couldn't find an equalizer.
The Huskies (9-2-1, 2-1-0) completed a sweep of the L.A. schools, and they and the Trojans are among five teams with six points after two weekend of Pac-12 play, three points behind fifth-ranked Stanford.
Washington held advantages in shots (13-10), shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (6-1), and came closest to scoring before Simon's PK in the 34th minutem a Shaye Villanueva free kick from just outside the box that USC goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme tipped onto her crossbar.
USC will be home Friday against Arizona State.
