MLS has been very vocal about wanting its teams to have stadia in downtown locales to appeal to its “hip," “urban” and “millennial” fans. The bid by a hopeful Detroit expansion group headed by Pistons’ owner Tom Gores and his Cleveland counterpart Dan Gilbert meets that criterion – with a different flavor to it.

MLS sets All-Star game at Chicago's Soldier Field
The MLS All-Star Game will be played at Soldier Field in Chicago on Wednesday, Aug. 2, the league announced as commissioner Don Garber was joined at the stadium Tuesday by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Fire owner and chairman Andrew Hauptman.

Should the Washington Post report come to pass that MAC Hermann Trophy winner Ian Harkes has agreed to terms with D.C. United and is expected to sign so he can start training camp next week, he would become the fifth son of a former MLS player to join the league and second in less than two years.

Coming full circle
When MLS started in 1996, all 10 teams played in stadia where either NFL or college football teams were the primary tenant (if not the building owners). Oversized seating capacity, narrow fields, obtrusive line markings, uneven surfaces and schedule changes necessitated by NFL games – not to mention the exorbitant rents in some cases, restrictions on advertising and the loss of other revenue streams – were among the many reasons MLS teams strived to distance themselves from their American football brethren.

Curt Onalfo apparently won’t have to worry about hurting anybody’s feelings to make room for his own assistants at the LA Galaxy. According to one report (albeit on Twitter), Bruce Arena is taking his entire LA Galaxy staff (not counting Onalfo) with him to the U.S. national team.

Outplayed Sounders win MLS Cup over Toronto FC in pks
TORONTO -- The third time was the charm for Seattle Sounders FC Saturday night. Despite being outplayed for most of the match, the Sounders won their first Division 1 pro soccer title, outlasting Toronto FC in penalty kicks, 5-4, after playing 120 minutes of scoreless soccer to capture MLS Cup at before a capacity crowd of 36,045 at BMO Field.
Two years after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the Major League Soccer commissioner says he is cancer free.
"My health is great," Garber said at his state of the league address at the Intercontinental Hotel Friday afternoon. "I am a year cancer free.

Safe to return?
With Jurgen Klinsmann no longer making player selections for the U.S. national team, maybe Brad Guzan feels it’s safe to return to Major League Soccer. One report quoting anonymous sources said the backup U.S. national team goalkeeper is “exploring a potential return.”
