Hernandez lifts Mexico, closes on scoring record

PASADENA, Calif. – An early goal by Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez sent Mexico to a 2-0 victory over Jamaica on Thursday, putting the Mexicans into the quarterfinals of the Copa America.

The result also clinched a knockout round berth for Venezuela and set up a Monday clash between “El Tri” and the “Vinotinto” in Houston for the Group C title – a coveted spot that many feel will allow the winner to avoid Argentina in the last eight.

Hernandez's goal, a header in the 18th minute, was his 45 for in international play and moved him within one of Jared Borgetti for the Mexican career record.

Second-half substitute Oribe Peralta added an insurance goal in the 81st to give Mexico an 11th straight victory and extend its unbeaten streak to 21.

The loss was Jamaica's second in the tournament and eliminated it along with Uruguay, which loss 1-0 to Venezuela in Philadelphia earlier in the evening.

Jamaica had the better of play in the first half but wasted several chances. The second half went end-to-end with opportunties for both sides.

Mexico played without injured midfielder Andres Guardado, one of four changes from the opening 3-1 victory over Uruguay made by manager Juan Carlos Osorio, who also replaced goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera with Guillermo Ochoa.

Jamaica had to do without Rudolph Austin, red carded in its 1-0 loss to Venezuela, as well as manager Winfried Schaefer, who was expelled during halftime of the opening match.
