OC Blues extend home streak
IRVINE, Calif. -- The Orange County Blues took a 1-0 win over the Real Monarchs on Roy Meeus’ 22nd-minute penalty kick at Anteater Stadium Saturday night.
The Blues (5-5-3, 18 points) had the first chance as Armenian forward Gevorg Karapetyan headed off target. The Blues earned a penalty kick on a handball violation, Meeus converting his third PK of the season. Then, Karapetyan’s header off a Meeus cross was disallowed for offside. In the 60th minute, Real Monarchs (4-7-4, 16 points) defender Chris Schuler was red-carded for a challenge on Karapetyan. The Blues began to dominate the match with a man advantage. Brenton Griffiths had an opener header go wide.
The Monarchs threatened against the run of play, earning a penalty kick on a Didier Crettenand handball. But Ricardo Velazco sent the PK wide left.
The Blues extended their home unbeaten streak to four games and Christopher ‘’Chino’’ Santana came off the bench for the last 25 minutes to make his first appearance of the season, marking his return from injury.
