SETTLING FOR A DRAW
Three goals not enough for OC Blues
IRVINE, Calif. -- Didier Crettenand scored on a free kick and penalty, but the Orange County Blues settled for a 3-3 tie with the Sacramento Republic at Anteater Stadium Sunday.
The first shot on goal was tipped over by Josh Cohen, the Republic taking the lead off the corner kick in the 21st minute. After a short corner, the ball was played to the far post for Mike Da Fonte to volley in off the post.
Crettenand converted the Blues’ eighth penalty kick of the season in the 51st minute. Brenton Griffiths earned the penalty as he was fouled following Roy Meeus’ free kick. Akwafei Ajeakwa then entered the match for the Blues (6-7-4, 22 points) and his pace caused problems for Sacramento (8-4-5, 29 points). Ajeakwa’s cross from the left flank off a breakaway found Trevin Caesar at the far post for a 2-1 lead in 72nd minute, signaling a frantic finish.
Sacramento tied the score six minutes later, an unmarked Cameron Iwasa heading in at the near post off Danny Barrera’s corner.
In the 81st minute, Crettenand slammed a shot from the edge of the penalty area into the far upper corner for his seventh goal of the season and a 3-2 advantage.
Mackenzie Pridham volleyed home to level the score, 3-3, in the 83rd minute.
Ajeakwa threatened to break the tie but was taken down on a breakaway by Da Fonte, who was ejected after a second caution, in the 87th minute.
