Arena calls in Frei, Manneh for USMNT

U.S. Men's National Team coach Bruce Arena has called in 32 players, including the Vancouver Whitecaps’ Gambia-born forward Kekuta Manneh, for training camp starting Tuesday in Carson, Calif.

Manneh and Swiss-born Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei are in the process of gaining citizenship.

This will be the first training camp coached by Arena since he replaced Jurgen Klinsmann in November, the team preparing for friendly matches against Serbia and Jamaica followed by the resumption of the final round of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying

All players on the roster are from the MLS, representing 15 teams. The camp does not fall during a FIFA international window for the release of players. Among the group are nine World Cup veterans, eight 2016 MLS All-Stars and three season-end league award winners.

The U.S. will meet Serbia at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego at 1 p.m. PT Jan 29 (ESPN2, UniMas) and Jamaica at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn., at 7 p.m. ET Feb. 3 (FS1, UniMas).

"With games at the end of the month and the World Cup Qualifiers in March, this is going to be a critical time for us," Arena said in a release. "It's important that we come in and quickly establish an understanding of what we are about and how we go about building our team. As for the players, we are coming into this with an open mind, so it's a huge opportunity for them."
