Her hat trick helps USWNT rout Romania

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Christen Press completed a first-half hat trick as the U.S. Women’s National Team took an 8-1 victory over Romania in a friendly match at Avaya Stadium Thursday night.

Press scored her fourth career hat trick with goals in the eighth, 34th and 38th minutes , increasing her career total to 40 goals.

The U.S., which took a 5-1 halftime lead, improved its record to 21-0-3 this season. The teams will be rematched at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., at 6:30 p.m. PT Saturday.

Tobin Heath (10th minute) and Morgan Brian (25th) upped the lead to 3-0 before Laura Rus cut Romania’s deficit in the 31st minute.

Alex Morgan had a penalty kick saved, but scored twice (52nd and 75th minutes), upping her total to 17 goals this season, tied with Carli Lloyd for the team lead, and 73 for her national team career.

Heath’s shot from inside the penalty area was redirected in for a 90th-minute own goal by Maria Ficzay, concluding the scoring.
