US U-23s top Canada, face March playoff for Olympic berth

SANDY, Utah--Mark Pelosi and Jerome Kiesewetter scored in the second half to lift the U.S. U-23 team over Canada 2-0 in Tuesday's third-place match in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament at Rio Tinto Stadium.

In order to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics, however, the US team must win a one-game playoff against Colombia, which will be played next March.

Before scoring the 69th-minute game-winner, Pelosi was involved in the most critical play of the game, drawing a foul that resulted in Canada's Giuliano Frano receiving his second yellow card of the game and being sent off in the 45th minute. The match remained scoreless until a U.S. corner kick pingponged out of a crowd at the goalmouth and to the top of the penalty area, where the waiting Pelosi sent a shot deflecting off defender Jeremy Gagnon-Larape and past netminder Maxime Crepeau.

Kiesewetter padded the lead from the penalty spot in the 84th after being fouled by Crepeau.
